Welcome to my podcast. I am Doctor Warrick Bishop, and I want to help you to live as well as possible for as long as possible. I’m a practising cardiologist, best-selling author, keynote speaker, and the creator of The Healthy Heart Network. I have over 20 years as a specialist cardiologist and a private practice of over 10,000 patients.

In this podcast, Doctor Warrick Bishop, a cardiologist, addresses questions from patients regarding COVID-19 and its impact on individuals with heart conditions.

He explains that individuals with rhythm-deficient immune systems are not necessarily at increased risk of contracting COVID-19, but those with rhythms from the lower part of the heart may carry an increased risk of a bad outcome if infected. Pacemaker patients are not necessarily at increased risk, and remote pacemaker checks are recommended to avoid exposure to the virus. Individuals with defibrillators or pump cardiac resynchronization devices need to be particularly careful as their hearts may play up during a COVID-19 infection. Doctor Bishop also discusses the use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin 2 blockers, stating that there is currently no indication to hold those medications.

He advises listeners to wash their hands and avoid exposure to the virus. Finally, he directs listeners to his website for the latest news on heart disease and encourages them to leave a review if they enjoyed the podcast.

  • COVID-19 is most concerning for individuals with diminished immunity or capacity to fight off the infection.
  • Rhythm disturbances in isolation, such as atrial fibrillation, do not necessarily increase an individual's risk of a poor outcome with COVID-19.
  • Atrial fibrillation in conjunction with other comorbidities can be a marker of increased risk for an individual.
  • Rhythms from the lower part of the heart or ventricles can indicate a problem and likely carry an increased risk of a bad outcome if infected with COVID-19.
  • Pacemaker patients are not necessarily at increased risk, and remote pacemaker checks are recommended to avoid exposure to COVID-19.
  • Individuals with defibrillators or pump cardiac resynchronization devices and left ventricles that are not functioning normally need to be particularly careful as they carry a higher risk.
  • There is no indication to hold ACE inhibitor type medications, including angiotensin 2 blockers, for individuals with hypertension at this stage.
  • The COVID-19 virus can last up to 72 hours on a hard surface, up to 24 hours on soft or porous surfaces, and a couple of hours in the air.
  • Washing hands with soap, using alcohol, bleach, or peroxide can help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
  • Doctor Warrick BIshop is a practicing cardiologist and author who believes that educated patients get the best health care.
