Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop, and I'm a cardiologist. I'd like to talk a little bit today about how we manage atrial fibrillation. Well, once we've made the diagnosis, often is the case, the heart's going fast. So we generally in the first instance, want to slow that heart beat down. Sometimes we'll think about returning the heart to normal rhythm. And that hinges on a couple of other bits and pieces specific to the patient and the likelihood of us being able to keep that individual in normal rhythm in the long term. One of the other things that we treat, which is really important, is we reduce the risk of stroke because if the heart's not beating properly, clots can form within the top chambers of the heart, the atria. Those clots can break off and go to the brain, causing a stroke. So part of our important management of atrial fibrillation is anti-coagulation or thinning the blood. It's a really interesting topic. It's a complex topic.
I've done a podcast with more information, so if you're just interested, the links should be below. In the meantime, please look after yourself if you have atrial fibrillation. Make sure it's well managed and you understand what's going on. Take care. Please don't die from a heart attack. And goodbye.
