Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop. I'm a cardiologist and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute.

This minute is about what goes on behind the scenes if you need to have surgery and you have complicated medical issues. While the long and the short of it is that, we, as a collective, are really concerned about making sure you have the safest journey possible.

In particular, I see people who have bad hearts for various reasons who are coming up to surgery, and I'm often in close discussion with their anesthetists to make sure the anesthetists will be looking after that individual while they're asleep, knows exactly what's going on, what the limitations and what the pitfalls, and where the safest path may be for individual patients.

It is a complex area trying to make sure people are as safe as possible before they go through a surgical procedure.
