Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop. I'm a cardiologist and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute.

I get plenty of questions about diet and lifestyle all the time, but one that's popped up, more so in recent time, is whether a ketogenic diet, that's one that's extremely restricted in carbohydrates, is beneficial for the heart.

Well, we know that the heart can run on ketones. Ketones being an energy source, which derive from fat. We know the brain can run on ketones as well. Well, it's a complicated answer, and that's mainly because we don't have a lot of information in that space. There's not a lot of trials to guide our understanding.

We know that a ketogenic diet, by virtue of the sort of foods you need to consume, increase the amount of saturated fats you tend to eat, and therefore that will increase cholesterol levels. What does it do to inflammation? What does it do to blood pressure? What does it do to weight loss? A very complex mix of impacts.

We really don't know the answer generally. I like people to keep their carbohydrates down.

If you'd like more information, though, I cover this in a podcast, the link is attached to this video. Just click on that and have a listen.

Till next time, though, I hope you live as well as possible, for as long as possible. Take care and bye for now!
