Hi, my name's Dr Warrick Bishop and welcome to my Healthy Heart Minute.

I'm a cardiologist and one of the things that I see people force when they black out. The word we use in medicine for blackout is syncope, coming from the word syncopation, which you might know from music, meaning stopping and starting. A syncope is a stop, really, and people black out.

Well, what causes it?

It can be a number of different things. Of course, it can be the heart. That's why I see people. It can be the brain. It might be epilepsy. It could be low blood pressure, particularly if there's a positional component to it, and it may even be the vagus nerve, which can be triggered, drop people's blood pressure, drop people's heart rate, and make them black out.

It's a fascinating area. It's a concerning area, and particularly if you drive a car and it occurs to you, it may impact on your livelihood.

I've done a podcast on blackouts or Syncope. That podcast is attached to this video. Check it out.

Till next time. I wish you the best. Please live as well as possible, for as long as possible. Bye for now!
